King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain are starting their first State Visit to Morocco, their neighbour Kingdom to the South, today, where they will be hosted by King Mohammed VI. We are taking a look at the past Spain-Morocco State Visits-
In June 1979, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were hosted by King Hassan of Morocco, on their first State Visit to their North African neighbour. A few years later, they hosted King Hassan on a Return Visit.
In 2000, King Mohammed VI (wearing the Order of Isabella the Catholic) and his sister Princess Lalla Meryem (in the Order of Isabella the Catholic) were hosted by King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia (wearing the Floral Tiara with Queen Maria Christina’s Mellerio Pearl Necklace), and Crown Prince Felipe on their State Visit to Spain, just months after his Accession.
Five years later, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia (in Queen Maria Christina’s Mellerio Pearl Necklace) were hosted by King Mohammed VI and Princess Lalla Salma on their second State Visit to Morocco, which included an Official Welcome, State Dinner, and a visit to the Tomb of King Hassan.
While this is their first State Visit, King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited Morocco for a short visit after their Accession, where they were hosted by King Mohammed VI and Princess Lalla Salma at a variety of events which included a Welcome Ceremony, an Iftar Dinner, and a visit to the Tomb of King Hassan.
