Queen Margrethe in Iceland

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark visited Iceland on the 1st of December, to mark the 100th anniversary of Iceland’s Independence from the Kingdom of Denmark. Until 1944, Iceland remained in a Federation with Denmark as ‘the Kingdom of Iceland’ (the Queen received the Icelandic name of Þórhildur when she was born in 1940), when it declared itself a Republic. The Danish Royal Family hosted the President and First Lady last year and attended a Concert to mark the Centenary in October.

Tidligere i dag ankom H.M. After arriving in Reykjavík, the Queen Margrethe visited the Harpa Opera House, where she was received by Iceland’s President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and First Lady Eliza Jean Reid, and was shown an exhibition by designer Hörður Lárusson about the history of the creation of the Icelandic flag, before attending a Luncheon. Afterwards, the Queen and Presidential Couple moved on to the Government building at Lækjargata, where the Danish-Icelandic Act of Union was proclaimed on the 1st of December, 1918. The Queen then visited Iceland’s National Gallery, Listasafn Íslands, to see the ‘Blossoming’ exhibition, and the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages, a research centre at the University of Iceland.

In the evening, Queen Margrethe attended a Dinner hosted by President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and First Lady Eliza Jean Reid at Bessastaðir, the President’s residence, at which the Queen gave a speech, which was followed by a Gala Performance at the Harpa Opera House.
