The only daughter of Prince Knud and Princess Caroline-Mathilde of Denmark, she was the eldest grandchild of King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine. Up until 1953, her father and brothers were set to succeed her uncle, King Frederick IX, since women couldn’t succeed to the Danish Throne. However, the law was changed, which eventually allowed her cousin, Queen Margrethe to succeed to the Throne. Educated in Denmark and Switzerland, unlike her brothers (who gave up their titles to marry for love) Princess Elisabeth had a long-term relationship with videographer Claus Hermansen, but did not marry him, and is thus the 12th and last in line to the Danish Throne. She has some official duties and was employed in the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1956 to 2001. Click HERE to learn about her Sapphire Tiara.

  1. This certainly is a difficult time for Queen Margrethe, with her husband’s death so recent, and now her cousin. Princess Elisabeth seemed to always be there to support the Royal Family.
