Spanish State Visit to Japan

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain are on a State Visit to Japan from April 4th-7th with the aim of strengthening friendly relations between Japan and Spain. They are based in Tokyo and will also visit Shizuoka. On Day 1, the King and Queen were welcomed at the Imperial Palace, visited the National Museum of Science and Innovation, met Spanish citizens living in Japan, and attended a State Banquet held in their honour by Emperor Akihito.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain attended an Official Welcome Ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, where they were welcomed by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan. The King and Emperor reviewed the guard, before the group had an audience with members of the Japanese Imperial Family, including Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako.

Afterwards, King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited the National Museum of Science and Innovation to attend a presentation of the bilateral scientific and technological projects between Spain and Japan. They also held a meeting with Spanish scientists working in Japan. Later, the King and Queen also met Spanish Citizens residing in Japan.

In the evening, there was a State Banquet at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, held in honour of the the King and Queen of Spain by Emperor Akihito. Both King Felipe and Emperor Akihito gave speeches. Members of the Imperial Family, as well as people with links to Spain and Japan were also present.

For the day events, King Felipe wore a dark suit with a blue. Queen Letizia wore a red Felipe Varela coat over a crimson velvet dress with ruby and diamond earrings loaned from Queen Sofia.  To meet Spanish citizens living in Japan, she changed into a Caroline Herrera dress. For the Banquet, King Felipe wore White Tie with the collar of the Order of the Chrysanthemum. Queen Letizia repeated a Felipe Varela ball gown with the Spanish Floral Tiara, sapphire and diamond earrings on loan from Queen Sofia, Fleur de Lys brooch, diamond bracelets from the Joyas de Pasar and the sash of the Order of the Chrysanthemum.

For the day events, Emperor Akihito wore a dark double-breasted suit and a dark tie. Empress Michiko wore a grey skirt with a matching caped sleeve jacket, pearls, and a gold brooch. For the Banquet, Emperor Akihito wore White Tie with the Order of the Golden Fleece. Empress Michiko wore a cream skirt and top with long cape sleeves and diamond earrings, a diamond riviere, and a miniature Order of Charles III.

For the day events, Crown Prince Naruhito wore a dark suit. Crown Princess Masako wore a pink outfit with pearls. At the Banquet, Crown Prince Naruhito wore White Tie with the Order of Charles III. Crown Princess Masako wore a pale gown with the Pearl Sunburst Tiara and parure and the Order of Isabella the Catholic.

At the Banquet, Princess Kiko wore a pale gown and her wedding tiara with its coordinating necklace and brooch and the Order of Isabella the Catholic. Princess Mako wore her personal tiara, as did her sister, Princess Kako.
