Princess Caroline’s Tiaras

Happy Birthday to Princess Caroline of Monaco and Hanover, who turns 60 today. The daughter of Prince Ranier II and the famous Princess Grace of Monaco, Princess Caroline is the sister of Prince Albert II, and was heiress presumptive to her brother until recently. Married three times, Princess Caroline has four children, and is currently separated from her third husband, Prince Ernst August of Hanover. As the ‘First lady’ of Monaco from 1982 to 2011, Princess Caroline was the only wearer of the family tiaras, at home and at foreign royal events. In honour of her birthday, we will take a look at her tiaras.

Made for Princess Charlotte of Monaco, Princess Caroline’s grandmother, in 1949 by Cartier, the intricate diamond, gold, and platinum tiara features large pearl drops suspended en tremblant from elaborate arches. It belongs to the Palais Princier de Monaco collection, and apart from a portrait of Princess Grace, this piece has been worn exclusively by Princess Caroline since the death of Princess Charlotte. The Tiara was worn in a series of official portraits taken before the death of her second husband, Stefano Casiraghi, to the 50th Birthday Gala of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, and to the Pre-wedding Gala of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg in 2012. It can be usually seen in a traveling exhibition on Princess Grace.

This scrolling diadem with three large diamonds in the center and a laurel wreath top originated with Empress Josephine of France. It was bought by the people of Brunswick and given to Prince Ernst August of Hanover (later Duke of Brunswick) as a wedding gift for his bride, Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia, daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II, in 1913. The Brunswick tiara was worn by Princess Victoria Louise throughout her life, even after the fall of the German monarchies in 1918. She was the mother of Queen Frederika of Greece and mother-in-law of Princess Sophie of Greece. In 2004, Princess Caroline wore the Brunswick Tiara at the Wedding of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark. She attended with her husband, Prince Ernst August of Hanover, who is Princess Victoria Louise’s grandson.

Composed of an antique floral motif, this tiara is an heirloom of the Hanover family, probably coming from diamond floral elements belonging to Princess Marie of Hanover (1849-1904). It was worn by Princess Chantal, first wife of Prince Ernst August of Hanover, at an event in the 1980s. It was worn by Princess Caroline at the Pre-Wedding Ball of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark in 2004. UPDATE– In July 2017, Ekaterina Malysheva wore this Tiara when she wed Prince Ernst August of Hanover, stepson of Princess Caroline, as did Alessandra de Osma when she wed Prince Christian of Hanover in Lima. Princess Ekaterina also wore the Tiara at the Wedding Ball of Prince Ludwig and Princess Sophie of Bavaria at Schloss Schleißheim in 2023.

  1. I was curious if you ever considered changing the page layout of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?
