Princess Elizabeth in New Brunswick, 1951

Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived in the Province of New Brunswick on this day in 1951, during their extensive Tour of Canada, different phases of which we have been individually covering over the past few weeks. Following a busy Summer, with the Opening of the Festival of Britain, the Danish State Visit, the Norwegian State Visit, the Tour of Canada was the first sign of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke, who had given up his Naval Careerbecoming full-time working Royals in the last few months of King George VI’s life, ahead of her Accession to the Throne.

Princess Elizabeth and the Duke were welcomed by D L McLaren, the Premier of New Brunswick, attending a welcomes Reception in Frederiction, where the Princess read a speech at the foot of the Parliament Buildings and later visited the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.

Tuesday, 6 November 1951, was a memorable day for New Brunswick, marking the start of then Princess Elizabeth’s first visit to the province. Hundreds of enthusiastic spectators were waiting to greet the 25-year-old heir presumptive and His Royal Highness The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh when the Royal train pulled into the station at Fredericton. The couple’s arrival in New Brunswick came at the end of a month-long tour of Canada that had taken them from coast to coast. During their two-day stay in New Brunswick, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip toured historic landmarks, talked to war veterans, listened to choral music, attended a glittering civic dinner, and received warm cheers of welcome from well-wishers, who flooded into the communities they visited. Just three months after Their Royal Highnesses bid farewell to New Brunswick, Princess Elizabeth’s accession to the throne was announced.

At the end of the visit, Princess Elizabeth (wearing the Girls of Great Britain & Ireland Tiara and Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace) and the Duke of Edinburgh attended a Civic Dinner at the Admiral Beatty Hotel in Saint John, followed by a Reception in the Georgian Ball Room, following which Princess Elizabeth and the Duke departed New Brunswick on the Royal Train,
