Queen Sonja’s Diamond Filigree Brooch

Happy Birthday to Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, who turns 47 today! To mark the day, we are taking a look at an heirloom jewel worn by the Norwegian Royal Ladies; Queen Sonja’s Diamond Filigree Brooch-

Featuring a delicate diamond filigree design in the shape of a diamond clip brooch, the design of the piece dates to around the first two decades of the 20th century, and its quite likely that it was acquired by Queen Maud, possibly having a greater British Royal connection. Queen Sonja has worn the Brooch in her hair at two British occasions, Prince William’s Pre-Wedding Gala in 2011 and the Queen Diamond Jubilee Dinner in 2012.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit was pictured wearing the Diamond Filigree Brooch at the Wedding of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall in 2005, the first member of the family (that I’ve found) pictured wearing the brooch.

More recently, Princess Martha Louise wore the Diamond Filigree Brooch at King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 80th Birthday Banquet in 2017. With quite a few young ladies coming of age in the family, this small heirloom would be the perfect jewel to loan to a younger lady, so there is no doubt we will continue to see the Brooch for years to come.

  1. I love to see royal ladies get inventive with their jewels, like Queen Sonja wearing the brooch in her hair. In the absence of a tiara, wear a brooch! Divine!!! I wish CP Mette-Marit much joy on her birthday!
