South African State Opening of Parliament, 1910

The Duke and Duchess of Connaught (wearing the Connaught Pearl Brooch and the Order of Victoria and Albert) were joined by Princess Patricia (in the Order of Victoria and Albert) as they represented King George V and presided over the Opening Ceremony of the new Union Parliament inside the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town on this day in 1910, during their Tour of South Africa inaugurating the new Union of South Africa as a dominion in the British Empire. Ten years later, the Duke and Duchess’ eldest son, Prince Arthur became the Governor-General of South Africa.
