Wolfers Necklace Tiara

Queen Mathilde of Belgium will be celebrating her 50th Birthday this week! With one of the smallest jewellery collections among her European counterparts, Queen Mathilde is frequently seen in just a few limited pieces, so today, we are continuing our series on her jewels by covering the Wolfers Necklace Tiara!

Created by Brussels Jeweller Wolfers from 205 diamonds, this Diamond Necklace was bought by a group of wealthy Belgian industrialists and public figures for Doña Fabiola de Mora y Aragón when she married King Baudouin of Belgium in 1960, worn as a necklace with her Spanish Wedding Gift Tiara for her Wedding Ball at the Royal Palace of Brussles, as well as for the Ball at the Musée du Cinquantenaire in Brussels.

In the first years after her marriage, Queen Fabiola always wore the pice as a necklace, like for the Diplomatic Reception at the Royal Palace of Brussels in 1961, the Belgian State Visit to France, the State Visit to Britain in 1963, the Wedding Ball of King Constantine II of Greece and Princess Anne Marie of Denmark in 1964, the British State Visit to Belgium in 1966, and the Belgian State Visit to Denmark in 1966.

By the mid 1960s, Queen Fabiola began wearing her Wolfers Necklace as a Tiara, most notably for a series of portraits as well as the Shah of Iran and Empress Farahs Banquet to celebrate the 2500th Anniversary of the Persian Empire at Persepolis in 1971, the French State Visit to Belgium in 1971, and the Japanese State Visit to Belgium in 1971.

By the mid-1970s, the Wolfers Tiara had become Queen Fabiola’s primary tiara, being worn for the Swedish State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Brussels in 1977, the Dutch State Visit to Belgium in 1981, the Enthronement of Emperor Akihito of Japan in 1990, and for the final time during the Belgian State Visit to the Netherlands in 1993, not long before King Baudouin passed away, following which the Wolfers Tiara remained in Queen Fabiola’s  possession but was not publicly worn.

After Queen Fabiola’s death in 2014, the Wolfers Necklace Tiara was among the jewels inherited by Queen Mathilde, who debuted the Tiara the following year on a State Visit to Poland, and then a few months later, the Tiara was worn for King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 70th Birthday Banquet as well as on the Belgian State Visit to Japan.

Quite soon, the Wolfers Tiara became one of Queen Mathilde’s favourite jewels, probably because it was not as grand as the Nine Provinces Tiara nor as frequently worn as her Laurel Wreath Tiara. The Tiara was notably worn for King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 80th Birthday Banquet in 2017, and also the following year, for the Australian State Visit to Belgium.

In 2017, Queen Mathilde wore the piece for the first time as a necklace, when she received the German Sustainability Award, and later wore the Wolfers Necklace for the then Prince of Wales’ 70th Birthday Dinner at Buckingham Palace in 2018.

More recently, Queen Mathilde wore the Wolfers Tiara for Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norways’s 18th Birthday Banquet last year, as well as for the Belgian State Visit to Lithuania a few weeks ago. There is no doubt we will continue to see this versatile jewel of years to come!

In 2023, the Duchess of Brabant wore the Wolfer’s Necklace Tiara for Prince Christian of Denmark’s 18th Birthday Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Palace.
