Soon after King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit’s landmark Tour of Europe in 1960, for which the Queen had worn a Diamond Bandeau Tiara that was never publicly reworn, she began wearing this spectacular Diamond Necklace Tiara, likely created from diamonds used in the Bandeau Tiara, or bought in lieu of the Bandeau. The piece was regularly worn as a necklace with Queen Sirikit’s Thai Tiaraand when worn as a Tiara was paired with the Thai Diamond Fringe. The piece made its international debut at the Wedding Ball of King Constantine II of Greece and Princess Anne Marie of Denmark in 1964.

By the 1970s, the Diamond Necklace Tiara had become one of Queen Sirikit’s three main Tiaras, worn the Thai State Visit to Iran in 1967 and the British State Visit to Thailand in 1972, when it appears large sapphires replaced some of the larger diamonds in the Tiara, paired with her Sapphire Suite, and the piece was also worn for the Spanish State Visit in 1987 and the Japanese State Visit in 1991.

By the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Diamond Necklace Tiara became the only Tiara worn by Queen Sirikit, with notable appearences during the British State Visit in 1996, the Swedish State Visit, the Danish State Visit in 2001, and the Dutch State Visit in 2004. The most spectacular final appearence came in 2006, for King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Diamond Jubilee Banquet, which came not long before Queen Sirikit retired from public duties due to her worsening health. Lets hope this spectacular Tiara makes a reappearance soon!
