Queen Sirikit’s Diamond Bandeau Tiara

Next week, Queen Sirikit of Thailand will celebrate her 90th Birthday! The glamorous Princess who became the popular Thai Queen Consort for almost 70 years and is now the much respected Queen Mother, Queen Sirikit possesses an incredible jewellery collection, and so for the next few days leading up to her Birthday, we are featuring some of the most prominent pieces from Queen Sirikit’s Collection, continuing with her Diamond Bandeau Tiara!

King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit commissioned a few jewels ahead of their monumental Tour of Europe and the United States in 1960, which included the Thai Tiara and this striking modern Diamond Floral Bandeau Tiara that featured a large central blossom, that had convertible diamond and ruby settings, likely made by Van Cleef & Arpels.

For Gala Events during the six-month Tour, Queen Sirikit alternated between wearing the Thai Tiara, traditional Thai Jewellery (and no Tiara) and this Diamond Bandeau Tiara, which made notable appearences for the State Banquet during the Danish State Visit to Austria, followed by a Banquet during the State Visit to Denmark, for the State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Oslo on the State Visit to Norway in September, and an appearence at the Gala Performance in the Drottningholm Palace Theatre on the State Visit to Sweden later that month.

The Diamond Bandeau Tiara was next worn by Queen Sirikit for an Audience with Pope John XXIII at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City during their State Visit to the Vatican, which also offers an opportunity to see the Tiara in motion.

Afterwards, Queen Sirikit wore the Diamond Bandeau Tiara for the State Banquet hosted by the Belgian King at the Royal Palace of Brussels during the State Visit to Belgium, with a spectacular final appearence for a Gala Concert by Royal Military Chapel in the Kurzaal in The Hague, at the end of the State Visit to The Netherlands, when the Tiara was worn with the magnificent Diamond Fringe. Following the Royal Tour, the Diamond Bandeau Tiara disappeared from public view, and our personal theory is that it was remade into another Tiara (which we will feature in two days).
