Dutch State Visit to Austria

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands are on a State Visit to the Republic of Austria form June 27th to the 29th, at the invitation of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. The theme of the visit is sustainable mobility, connected society and cultural exchange, highlighting the strong ties and boosting relations between the two countries. The last Dutch State Visit to Austria was in 1962.

The State Visit began with a welcome ceremony at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, before King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima laid a wreath for the victims of the Second World War at the Namenmonument in the Ostarrichi Park and were given a tour of the memorial commemorating the victims of the Holocaust. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima also visited the Mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, and the Deputy Speaker of the Austrian Parliament, Doris Bures.

In the evening, Federal President Van der Bellen hosted a State Banquet in honour of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima (wearing a white, one-shouldered Stella McCartney gown with the Antique Pearl Tiara, pearl and diamond earrings and the Romanov Pink Diamond and Pearl Corsage) at the Belvedere Palace in Vienna.

On the second day of the State Visit, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima began the say at the Brotfabrik cultural center before visiting Sonnwendviertel and a tram ride back to Vienna, where the Royal Couple saw aspects of Viennese and Austrian culture and discussed the historical ties between the Netherlands and Austria at the National Library and a traditional coffee house. Later, the King ad Queen attended a Lunch hosted by Chancellor Karl Nehammer at the Naturhistorisches Museum before a  reception for the Dutch community in Austria.

In the evening, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima (wearing pieces of the Dutch Mellerio Ruby Parure) hosted a Return Concert by the Netherlands Chamber Choir for Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and the First Lady. The choir performed the world premiere of ‘Van Gogh in Me’ in the Konzerthaus, in which artworks by Vincent van Gogh and Gustav Klimt come to life to music by their contemporaries.
