Tomorrow, the glamorous Princess Madeleine of Sweden, the Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland will mark her 40th Birthday, so we are featuring some of the spectacular heirloom and personal jewels of the glamorous younger daughter of the Swedish King and Queen, and after featuring the Aquamarine Bandeau, we are continuing with the Modern Fringe Tiara!

Made in the late 19th or early 20th century, this Diamond Tiara does not share many elements with traditional Fringe Tiaras but has been termed that since it is the ‘newer’ of the two Fringe Tiaras in the Swedish Royal Family. While its provenance is unknown, the Tiara may be the one from the collection of the Earls of Tankerville, who were related to the Swedish Royal Family through Lady Patricia Ramsay.

The Tiara was acquired by King Carl XVI Gustaf as a gift for Queen Silvia to mark their 10th Wedding Anniversary in 1986, though it does not seem to have been publicly worn until Crown Prince Haakon’s 18th Birthday Banquet in 1991, and following that was worn for the Swedish State Visit to India in 1993, the Wedding of Baroness Christina Silfverschiöld and Baron Hans De Geer af Finspång in 1999, King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Diamond Jubilee Reception in 2006, and at Queen Margrethe’s 70th Birthday, making the Modern Fringe Tiara perfect for less formal gala events.

While Princess Madeleine received the  Aquamarine Bandeau Tiara for her 18th Birthday in 2000, she began wearing the Modern Fringe Tiara as soon as 2001, with a first appearance at the Wedding of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, and it was since worn for many gala events, including numerous Nobel Prize Ceremonies, the Wedding of Prince Manuel of Bavaria and Princess Anna of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg in 2006, and the Wedding Ball of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco in 2011.

The Modern Fringe Tiara can also be worn as a necklace, as Queen Silvia wore it for the Wedding of Prince Joachim of Denmark and Alexandra Manley and Queen Margrethe’s Ruby Jubilee Gala in 2012, while Princess Madeleine wore the piece as a necklace for the Wedding of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and Crown Princess Victoria wore the piece as a necklace only once, at a Gala for the 25th anniversary of the Foundation for Children at the Palace of Versailles.

When Princess Madeleine got married to Christopher O’Neill in 2013, she received the Modern Fringe Tiara as a wedding present from her parents, wearing it for her Wedding at the Chapel of the Royal Palace of Stockholm and with a different gown for the Reception.

The Modern Fringe Tiara remains a favourite of Princess Madeleine, who usually pairs it with heirlooms from the family collection, and has worn it for the Wedding of Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 70th Birthday Banquet in 2016, King’s Dinner for Nobel Laureates in 2017, the South Korean State Visit to Sweden, the King’s Dinner for Nobel Laureates in 2019, and most recently for New Portraits of the Swedish Royal Family. There is no doubt we will continue to see this splendid Tiara for years to come!
