Buckingham Palace has announced that there will be limited attendance from members of the Royal Family on the Balcony of Buckingham Palace after Trooping the Colour tomorrow. Whereas, in the past, the entire extended Royal Family would appear, this year only the main working Royals are set to join the Queen. This led us to remember the instances when Foreign Royals have joined the British Royal Family on the Balcony after Trooping the Colour, so this is the perfect opportunity to feature that!

We are going to start with an instance not during the Queen’s Reign, but one right before, when she, as Princess Elizabeth, deputized for the terminally-ill King, taking the salute of the Brigade of Grenadier Guards, with King Haakon VII of Norway and his granddaughter, Princess Astrid, joining the Royal Family on the Balcony of Buckingham Palace afterwards, in the midst of the Norwegian State Visit to Britain in 1951.

Princess Sibylla, Princess Margaretha and Princess Birgitta of Sweden joined the Royal Family on the Balcony of Buckingham Palace in 1954, just days before the Swedish State Visit to Britain.

In 1966, King Frederik IX and Princess Benedikte of Denmark joined the Royal Family on the Balcony of Buckingham Palace after the Trooping the Colour Ceremony.

King Constantine II of Greece and members of the Greek Royal Family, who resided in London, joined the Royal Family up on the Balcony of the Palace.

From 1984 until 2000, Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg was the colonel of the Irish Guards and often rode a horse behind the Queen’s carriage. The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte, as well as other members of their family, often joined the British Royal Family on the Balcony of the Palace after Trooping the Colour.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were joined by King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola of Belgium, Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands on the Balcony in 1990, for the Battle of Britain 50th Anniversary Parade and Flyover outside Buckingham Palace.

In 1992, there was a special guest who joined the Royal Family on the Balcony of Buckingham Palace; Princess Sophie of Greece and Hanover, the sister of the Duke of Edinburgh, likely with her husband, Prince George William of Hanover.
This was such a fun post! I had no idea that so many foreign royals had stood on the famous balcony. I expect they thought their view from that vantage point was amazing. I’ll bet you can see all the way down the Mall from there!
