Luxembourg State Visit to Portugal

Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa of Luxembourg are on a 2-Day State Visit to Portugal at the request of the Luxembourg Government and invitation of the Portuguese President to celebrate and build diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties on May 11 and 12. The last Luxembourg State Visit to Portugal was in 2010, while the last Portuguese State Visit to Luxembourg was in 2017.

Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa were welcomed by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in an Official Welcome Ceremony at the Praça do Império in Lisbon, after which the Royal Couple attended a wreath laying ceremony at the tomb Luís de Camões in the Church of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos before making their way to a meeting with the President at the Palácio de Belém, where there was a Press Conference. In the afternoon, the Grand Duke received the Key to the city of Lisbon at Lisbon City Hall before the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess took a tram tour of the historic districts

In the evening, President Rebelo de Sousa hosted a State Banquet in honour of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa (wearing the Belgian Scroll Tiara and her Black and White Pearl Earrings) at the Palácio de Ajuda in Lisbon. Both the Grand Duke and the President gave speeches, and the Duke and Duchess of Braganza (in her Diamond Bandeau Tiara) were also present.

On the second day of the State Visit, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa visited the Champalimaud Foundation and had a working meeting at the seat of the Portuguese parliament ahead of the Portugal-Luxembourg Economic Forum and Lunch with the Portuguese Prime Minister. Later the Grand Ducal Couple visited the “Portugal and Luxembourg” exhibition and the “Casa Santa Maria”, refuge of the Grand Ducal Family in 1940, ahead of the presentation of the honorary doctorate degree from the “Universidade NOVA” to the Grand Duke. In the evening, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa (wearing the Amethyst Tiara and Oval Amethyst Tiara as Bracelets) hosted a Return Reception in Lisbon. The Duke and Duchess of Braganza were also present.

  1. Portugal is still maintaining high standards when it comes to State Visits: white tie! Very nice to see the Grand Duchess wearing a tiara again, looking so elegant. And to see the Duke and Duchess of Braganza was an added pluss, although it is true that they are usually invited when Royal Heads of State are paying State Visits to the country. Something to learn from when it comes to other previous monarchic republics perhaps??
