Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Jamaica

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge continued their Tour of the Caribbean in Jamaica on March 22nd, as part of Royal Tours around the Commonwealth to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee! The Duke and Duchess have already visited Belize and and will visit the Bahamas before returning to Britain in a week. The Queen is the Sovereign of Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas, with the Duke set to become King of those nations in the future.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport in Jamaica from Belize, where they were met by Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson-Smith. After a Guard of Honour, the Duke and Duchess were received by the Governor General of Jamaica, Sir Patrick Allen, and Lady Allen at King’s House.

Later, the Duke and Duchess visited Trenchtown, the historic neighbourhood of Kingston which was the birthplace of reggae music. The Duke and Duchess met winners of Jamaica’s famous Manning Cup and the Jamaica National bobsleigh team, while the Duke got a chance to play football with Raheem Sterling. After meeting some of the massive crowds, the Duke and Duchess played music on a visit to Trench Town Culture Yard Museum where Bob Marley used to live.

On their second day in Jamaica, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, and his wife, Juliet, at his office in Kingston, before going to the Shortwood Teachers’ College in Kingston. Later, the Duke and Duchess visited the Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine before travelling to Montego Bay to meet the Jamaican Defence Force at the Infantry Training Centre in Flankers.

In the evening, the Governor General hosted a State Dinner in honour of the Duke (wearing his Medals and the Star of the Order of the Garter) and Duchess of Cambridge (wearing a Jenny Packham Gown, the Queen’s Emerald Tassel Suite, the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II, and the Star of the Royal Victorian Order) at King’s House in Kingston. Both the Duke and Governor General gave speeches, with the Duke saying:

Already in our short time here in Jamaica, Catherine and I are delighted to have felt what Bob Marley described so many years ago – the spirit of ‘One love’ that Jamaica has given to the world and which makes this country so special.

As we heard for ourselves at the cradle of reggae music last night in Trench Town, when the Rasta drums start playing, you really do know how to have a good time.

Here in Kingston today we’ve met students and staff at Shortwood Teachers’ College, striving to give children a strong foundation for life;

Doctors and nurses in Spanish Town Hospital working selflessly to care for the sick and vulnerable despite the challenges of the pandemic;

And the Jamaican Defence Force working hand in glove with local communities in Flankers to prepare young people for employment and adult life.

We deeply admire their dedication and commitment.

Catherine and I only wish we had more time to spend with you all in Jamaica.

On their final day in Jamaica, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the inaugural Commissioning Parade for service personnel from across the Caribbean who have recently completed the Caribbean Military Academy’s Officer Training Programme, at the Jamaica Defence Force, departing in a Land Rover used by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh 70 years ago.
