The Engagement of Prince Richard of Gloucester, the second son of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott, and Birgitte Van Deurs at Kensington Palace in London on this day in 1972 (50 years ago), during which the couple were joined by his mother, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, and her father, Asger Henriksen. The couple expected a quiet life, with Prince Richard pursing a career as an architect, but the sudden death of his brother, Prince William, just weeks after their wedding later in 1972, meant that they became the Heirs to the Dukedom, taking up duties as a full-time working members of the Royal Family as the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, roles on which they continue to this day.
