Antique Corsage Tiara

Happy Birthday to Princess Nina of Greece and Denmark, who turns 35 today! The Swiss Heiress who recently married the younger son of King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, Princess Nina has not yet had the opportunity to wear many royal jewels, an exception being the spectacular Antique Corsage Tiara!

But first, lets learn about Princess Nina! The daughter of Thomas Flohr, a Swiss billionaire and founder of VistaJet, and Katharina Konečný, the creative director of the House of Fabergé and a founding editor of Vogue Russia and Vogue Greece, Nina Nastassja Flohr was born in Switzerland and spent part of her childhood in London where her mother was the jewelry editor at Tatler. After working as the creative director of VistaJet, she collaborated with Moncler on cabin crew uniforms and worked with Nobu Matsuhisa to create deluxe menus for airplanes, and is the founder and creative director of the Kisawa Sanctuary, a luxury hotel, and the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies, an environmental conservation center on Benguerra Island in Mozambique. In 2020, Nina married Prince Philippos of Greece, the youngest son of King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece,  in a Civil Ceremony in Switzerland, which was followed by a Religious Wedding in Athens, the first Royal Wedding in Athens since the end of the monarchy. We wish HRH a very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!

Thought to have been made in Prussia during the reign of Frederick the Great, the pearl and diamond corsage brooch ended up in the collection of Princess Louise of Prussia, Grand Duchess of Baden, who was pictured wearing it for a portrait and also at the Wedding of King Manuel II of Portugal and Princess Augusta Victoria of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in 1913. After Grand Duchess Louise’s death in 1923, the pearl and diamond corsage was among the jewels inherited by her daughter, Queen Victoria of Sweden, and in turn inherited by her granddaughter, the future Queen Ingrid of Denmark, among a series of spectacular jewels like the Baden Palmette Tiara.

Queen Ingrid only wore the corsage rarely, with notable appearences at a Gala Performance for the 80th Birthday of her grandfather, King Gustav V of Sweden, in 1938, during the  Danish State Visit to France in 1950, the Danish State Visit to Britain in 1951, and a Banquet at the Danish Embassy in Paris in 1951, as well as wearing the corsage as a necklace at some point in the early 1960s.

When her younger daughter, Princess Anne Marie was approaching her 18th Birthday and her marriage to King Constantine of Greece in 1964, Queen Ingrid had Grand Duchess Louise’ pearl and diamond corsage converted into a Tiara, with a brooch and a pair of earrings created from other elements, which was first worn for Princess Anne Marie’s Farewell Dinner and a Gala in Copenhagen days after her 18th Birthday in the lead-up to spectacular Wedding celebrations in Athens.

Despite getting the Greek Emerald Parure and the Greek Ruby Parure, the Antique Corsage Tiara as a delicate choice a young Queen, being notably worn for a Tunisian State Visit, a visit to the Vatican in 1966, and the Wedding Ball of Prince Karl of Hesse and Countess Yvonne Szapary von Muraszombath Széchysziget und Szapár in 1966.

In exile, Queen Anne Marie has preferred the Emerald Parure and Ruby Parure, and has worn the Antique Corsage Tiara rarely, most notably for Prince Henrik’s 60th Birthday Banquet in 1994, King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 60th Birthday Banquet in 1997, and Prince Henrik’s 75th Birthday Banquet in 2009.

In 1986, Queen Anne Marie loaned the Antique Corsage Tiara for the first and only time to her daughter, Princess Alexia, for the the Return Banquet during the Spanish State Visit to Britain. But since Princess Alexia acquired her own Diamond Tiara soon after, she has not been pictured in the Tiara since.

The Antique Corsage Tiara was later worn by Marie Chantal Miller at her Wedding to Crown Prince Pavlos in 1995, and worn to all of her Gala events; the Wedding Ball and the Wedding of Prince Joachim of Denmark and Alexandra Manley in 1995 and King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 50th Birthday Banquet in 1996,  until she got the Miller Fringe Tiara the following year.

Queen Anne Marie’s youngest daughter, Princess Theodora, has worn the Antique Corsage Tiara for all but two of her Gala events for the last 20 years; starting from the Wedding Gala and the Wedding of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark in 2004, the Wedding of Prince Joachim and Marie Cavallier in 2008, Queen Margrethe’s Ruby Jubilee Banquet in 2012, and most recently, Crown Prince Frederik’s 50th Birthday Banquet in 2018.

For the past decade, Princess Tatiana has been the primary wearer of the Antique Corsage Tiara, starting from her 2010 wedding to Prince Nikolaos of Greece, with subsequent appearences at the Wedding of Princess Madeline of Sweden in Stockholm in 2013, and King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 80th Birthday Banquet in 2017.

The most recent appearance of the Antique Corsage Tiara came in 2021, when it was worn by Nina Flohr for her Wedding to Prince Philippos of Greece, the first Royal Wedding in Athens since the end of the monarchy. With the entire Greek Royal Family expected to attend Queen Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee celebrations later this year, it will be interesting which of the three Princess Theodora, Princess Tatiana, and Princess Nina will wear the Antique Corsage Tiara,  but there is no doubt we will continue to see this heirloom for years to come!
