Queen Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is marking the 50th Anniversary of the Accession to the Danish Throne today, after the death of her father, King Frederick IX of Denmark on this day in 1972. While the series of lavish events originally planned have been rescheduled for September, the Danish Royal Family did attend a couple of events today, as originally scheduled.

In the morning, Queen Margrethe (wearing her Ruby Horseshoe Brooch and Diamond Daisy Brooch) and Crown Prince Frederik presided over a special formal Council of State, the 560th of the Queen’s reign, though with only five ministers, including Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, due to the pandemic situation. In a speech, Queen Margrethe reflected on her first Council of State in 1972, after which the Prime Minister gave a speech and, on behalf of the government, congratulated the Queen for the 50 years as Denmark’s Sovereign.

Afterwards, Queen Margrethe was joined by Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Prince Mary (wearing earrings and a ring from the Danish Ruby Parure), Prince Joachim and Princess Marie (wearing Queen Alexandrine’s Sapphire Brooch), and Princess Benedikte for the Folketing, Danish Parliament’s, official celebration of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee at Christiansborg Palace.

In the afternoon, the entire Royal Family attended a wreath-laying ceremony at King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid’s grave outside Roskilde Cathedral to mark the 50th Anniversary of King Frederik IX’s death.

In the evening, the entire Danish Royal Family joined Queen Margrethe for a Dinner at Christian VII’s Palace in Amalienborg. The Flora Danica Dinner Service, the most expensive Danish tableware, was used for the first time since Queen Ingrid’s 80th birthday in 1990.

  1. The little ruby horseshoe pin has done its job. Queen Margrethe has been an excellent queen to her country, much loved and admired by not only her people but by people all over the world. She is kind and talented and has represented Denmark with grace and intelligence everywhere she’s gone. Her father would have been proud to see that the change he sought in the succession laws of his country was more than justified. Congratulations to Queen Margrethe on achieving such an amazing and significant anniversary!

  2. The addition of the luncheon photos has made this celebration complete. Really, what more could the Queen ask than to be surrounded by her family? All her grandchildren look so happy for their Grand-mamma!

    1. It is one of the more iconic pictures of the celebrations. I was supposed to be in Denmark for the Jubilee events so was really looking forward to seeing them in person (had to delay my flights for the Summer).
