Dutch State Visits to Norway

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands will begin their State Visit to Norway tomorrow where they will be hosted by the Norwegian Royal Family. We have avoided covering any Dutch-Norwegian State Visits for years in anticipation of this visit, so today, we finally feature the Dutch State Visits to Norway and Norwegian State Visits to the Netherlands!

King Haakon VII of Norway and Queen Maud of Norway hosted Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik of The Netherlands on the first Dutch State Visit to Norway from September 15 to 18 in 1922, more HERE, while King Haakon made the first State Visit to The Netherlands from June 5 to 7 in 1923. Over 30 years later, following the Second World War, Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard hosted King Haakon VII for a State Visit from August 12-14 in 1954.

Exactly a decade later, in September 1964, King Olav was hosted by Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard for a State Visit which included a State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, a Dinner in Rotterdam and a Return Dinner hosted by the King for Queen Juliana (wearing the Dutch Emerald Tiara and Order of St. Olav) and Prince Bernhard in Amsterdam.

Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus were hosted by the Norwegian Royal Family on their State Visit to Norway in May 1986, the highlight of which was a State Banquet hosted by King Olav (in the Order of the Netherlands Lion) in honour of the Queen (wearing the Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara and Order of St. Olav) and Prince at the Royal Palace of Oslo. Crown Prince Harald, Crown Princess Sonja (in the Norwegian Emerald Parure and the Order of the Crown), Princess Ragnhild (wearing Queen Maud’s Diamond Tiara and the Order of the Crown) and Princess Astrid (in Queen Alexandra’s Turquoise Circlet and the Order of the Crown). 1. Wonderful! I can’t wait to see the photos of the banquet. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima have been very busy since the pandemic situation has improved. I believe that just last week they paid a visit to the United Arab Emirates. It’s always so much fun to see what the royal ladies wear!

    1. The Dutch Royal Couple has indeed been very busy at late. And it looks like they will just keep on going. First now the exciting State Visit to Norway, where I do hope we will see a lot of glitter. There are potentially four tiara outings during this visit since it has been stated that Princess Märtha Louise will also attend the State Banquet on day 1. Then in December we have the Dutch Monarchs’ State Visit to Greece! This is how we like it! 🙂
