Princess Elizabeth in Halifax, 1951 

Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on this day in 1951, during their extensive Tour of Canada, different phases of which we have been individually covering over the past few weeks. Following a busy Summer, with the Opening of the Festival of Britain, the Danish State Visit, the Norwegian State Visit, the Tour of Canada was the first sign of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke, who had given up his Naval Careerbecoming full-time working Royals in the last few months of King George VI’s life, ahead of her Accession to the Throne.

The Duke of Edinburgh first visited Nova Scotia on an official basis when he accompanied the then Princess Elizabeth in 1951 on a tour that took them to every province in Canada. They were in Nova Scotia from 7 to 10 November 1951. While in Nova Scotia, they stayed at Government House and attended a number of events including a receptions at Province House, Halifax City Hall, dinners at the Lord Nelson Hotel and the Nova Scotian Hotel and visits to the School for the Deaf, Camp Hill Hospital and Dalhousie University.

Princess Elizabeth (wearing the Nizam of Hyderabad Tiara, Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace, and the Order of the Garter) and the Duke were guests of honour at the Dinner hosted by the Premier and Government of Nova Scotia at the Nova Scotian Hotel in Halifax, which was followed by a Reception at the Lord Nelson Hotel.

  1. Being from Halifax, I find these photos fascinating on many levels! By the way, it’s a damp day here today, but not as wet as it appears to have been for Her Majesty and His Royal Highness.
