Jordanian State Visit to Britain, 2001

The British Royal Family welcomed King Abdullah and Queen Rania of Jordan on their State Visit to Britain on this day in 2001, 45 years after the last Jordanian State Visit, of his parents, King Hussein and Princess Muna Al Hussein, in 1966. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have made only one State Visit to Jordan, in 1984, but their have been multiple official visits by other members of the Royal Family and more private visits by the Jordanian Royal Family to the United Kingdom, with the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall scheduled to visit Jordan later this month.

The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Royal welcomed King Abdullah and Queen Rania of Jordan with an Official Welcome Ceremony following a Carriage Procession and a Guard of Honour. Afterwards, there was a Luncheon in the Castle and some official engagements.

In the evening, the Queen (wearing the Burmese Ruby Tiara and Queen Victoria’s Crown Ruby Parure for the first time with the Order of Al-Hussein bin Ali) and Duke of Edinburgh (in the Supreme Order of the Renaissance) hosted a State Banquet in honour of King Abdullah (in the Order of the Bath) and Queen Rania (wearing her Diamond Tiara, Crown Brooch, and the Order of Al-Hussein bin Ali) at St George’s Hall in Windsor Castle, which was also attended by the Prince of Wales Prince Ali and Princess Basma of Jordan (in Queen Zein’s Diamond Tiara), the Princess Royal (in the Queen Mother’s Aquamarine Pine-Flower Tiara), the Earl and Countess of Wessex (wearing her Wedding Tiara), the Duchess of Grafton (in the Grafton Tiara), and the Countess of Airlie (wearing the Airlie Tiara).

The following day, Queen Rania visited a Children’s Charity in London before the King and Queen attended a Banquet hosted by the Lord Mayor of London at the Guildhall, at which the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (in the Gloucester Honeysuckle Tiara) were also present.

On their last day, Jordanian Royal Couple had a meeting with Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife at 10 Downing Street, before the King Abdullah and Queen Rania (wearing her Diamond Tiara) hosted a Return Banquet for the Queen and members of the British Royal Family, including the the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (wearing Queen Mary’s 11-row Pearl Choker), at Spencer House in London.
