Wedding of Lady May Cambridge, 1931

The Wedding of Lady May Cambridge, daughter of the Earl of Athlone (born Prince Alexander of Teck) and Princess Alice of Albany, and Sir Henry Abel Smith in the Village of Balcombe in Sussex on this day in 1931, close to the Athlone family residence at Brantridge Park. The couple had three children and were married for over 60 years, during which time he served as the Governor of Queensland in Australia from 1958 to 1966, passing away within a year of each other in 1993 and 1994.

Royal Guests and Relatives included Queen Mary (aunt of the bride), the Prince of Wales (cousin of the bride), the Duke (cousin of the bride) and Duchess of York, the Duke of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent, Princess Victoria, and Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden, Duke of Västerbotten (cousin of the bride). The bridesmaids included Princess Elizabeth (now Queen Elizabeth II), Princess Ingrid of Sweden (later Queen of Denmark), Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (later Princess of Sweden), and Lady Alice Montagu-Douglas-Scott (later Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester). Princess Ingrid introduced Princess Sibylla to her brother, Prince Gustaf Adolf, during the wedding and the two got married almost exactly a year later.
