Independence of the Kingdom of Lesotho, 1966

Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent (wearing her Pearl Circle Bandeau, Pearl Earrings, her Bow Brooch, and the Royal Victorian Order) represented the Queen as she presided over the Independence Celebrations of the Kingdom of Lesotho at the Maseru National Stadium on this day in 1996, from the old British colony of Basutoland, with the Paramount Chief of Basutoland succeeding as King Moshoeshoe II of Lesotho, receiving the Constitutional Instruments from Princess Marina. King Moshoeshoe’s son, King Letsie III, is the current King of Lesotho.

Independence was granted at midnight, and the previous evening, Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent (wearing the Cambridge Sapphire Parure) had joined King Moshoeshoe II and Queen ‘Mamohato Bereng Seeiso for a Flag Lowering and a Flag Raising Ceremony.
