German State Visit to Sweden

The Swedish Royal Family hosting President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the First Lady Elke Büdenbender, who are on a State Visit to Sweden from September 7th to the 9th, to celebrate and build diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia last made a State Visit to Germany in 2016, and have many close ties to the country.

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel received President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the First Lady Elke Büdenbende on arrival at Arlanda Airport, and then met with King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia at the Royal Mews ahead of a carriage procession to the Royal Palace of Stockholm, for the official Welcome Ceremony, during which the President received military honours and inspected the guard of honour.

Afterwards, the group were joined by other members of the Royal Family for an Audience and Luncheon, followed by a visit to the German Church. The King and President visited the Swedish Parliament and the Queen and First Lady visited the Children’s Ombudsman, for conversations about the children’s rights and how the pandemic has affected the children, as well as a presentation of the Children’s House’s activities.

In the evening, King Carl Gustaf (in the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany) and Queen Silvia (wearing Queen Sofia’s 9-Prong Tiara and the Bernadotte Emerald Parure) hosted a State Banquet in honour of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the First Lady Elke Büdenbende at the Royal Palace of Stockholm. They processed down the media corridor and received guests before the Banquet. Both the King and President gave speeches. Crown Princess Victoria (wearing the Connaught Diamond Tiara), Prince Daniel, and Prince Carl Philip were also present. The President got the Order of the Seraphim, while the First Lady wore the Order of the Polar Star.
