The Swedish Royal Family had visited the Kingdom of Norway in early July, and the visit to Sweden by the Norwegian Royal Family was among the year-long celebrations to mark the Centenary of the independent Kingdom of Norway, which also included State Visits to Britain and Denmark and a splendid Ball at the Royal Palace of Oslo. Prince Charles of Denmark, who was married to Princess Maud of Wales, was elected the King of Norway in 1905, taking the regnal name of King Haakon VII, after the Kingdom got rid of the personal union with the Swedish Monarchy and became an independent Kingdom.
