Happy Birthday to Queen Anne Marie of Greece, who turns 75 today! The youngest daughter of King Frederik IX of Denmark and Princess Ingrid of Sweden, she married King Constantine II of Greece in 1964. Despite being exiled for more than five decades, as the sister of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, sister-in-law of Queen Sofia of Spain, cousin of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, King Harald V of Norway, and the Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Anne Marie attends a plethora of glittering events, where she wears pieces from her spectacular jewel collection, including this Modern Diamond Necklace!

Featuring two rows of modern-cut diamonds that form a v-shape from which a variety of pendants can be suspended, this Necklace was likely a wedding gift to Princess Anne Marie of Denmark at the time of her Wedding to King Constantine II of Greece in 1964 from a wealthy Greek Tycoon, or more likely given around the time of the birth of the couples’ first child, Princess Alexia.

The first major appearance of the Modern Diamond Necklace came in 1965, when it was worn at the splendid Christening of Princess Alexia of Greece with a sugarloaf emerald pendant, pieces from the Greek Emerald Parure and a ruby, emerald, and pearl suite likely given as a gift from King Constantine to celebrate the birth.

The next year, following the coup in Greece, the Royal Family’s situation was delicate, but that did not stop Queen Anne Marie from wearing her Modern Diamond Necklace for the Christening of Crown Prince Pavlos, which was the last great event of the Greek Monarchy a few months before they went into exile.

The Modern Diamond Necklace came with the Royal Family, and Queen Anne Marie wore it at her father, King Frederik IX of Denmark’s 70th Birthday in 1969, as well as her her sister, Princess Benedikte’s 25th Wedding Anniversary in 1993, and an unidentified event in the 1980s, when it was paired with a pearl pendant and Queen Sophia’s Star and Pearl Tiara. At the Wedding Gala of Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg in 1994, the necklace was worn with a dingle diamond pendant.

From the 1980s, the modern Diamond Necklace began to be frequently worn by Queen Anne Marie’s eldest daughter, Princess Alexia, first with the pearl pendant and Antique Corsage Tiara at the Return Banquet during the Spanish State Visit to Britain in 1986, then with the sugar-loaf emerald at Queen Margrethe’s 50th Birthday in 1990 and the Wedding of Prince Joachim of Denmark and Alexandra Manley in 1995, as well as a diamond pendant that coordinates with her own Diamond Earrings at Queen Margrethe’s 60th Birthday in 2000 and at the Wedding of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark in 2004. There is no doubt we will continue to see this splendid jewel for years to come!
