Queen Noor’s Diamond Tiara

Happy Birthday to Queen Noor al-Hussain of Jordan, who turns 70 today! The accomplished Arab-American who became the fourth wife of the late King Hussein and an influential philanthropist, Queen Noor attended many glittering royal events in the 1980s and 1990s, often wearing this spectacular Diamond Sunburst Tiara!

Soon after the fourth Wedding of King Hussein of Jordan, this time to Lisa Halaby, he gave his new Queen a Tiara Tiara with abstract rays of diamond sunbursts, a fitting tribute to the newly renamed Queen Noor al-Hussein ‘Light of Hussein’. While the rays originally graduated towards the center, it was soon altered with multiple graduated points added.  King Hussein gave Tiaras to each of his four wives, with the more famous being Queen Alia’s Cartier Tiara, though Princess Muna received the most amount of Tiaras.

Queen Noor wore the original version of her Diamond Tiara for an Official Portrait as well as for a Banquet before the design was altered with multiple graduated points added to the Tiara.

In the 1980s, Queen Noor wore the Diamond Tiara for a plethora of official portraits, as well as two Banquets during the State Visit of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh to Jordan in 1984 and also on a State Visit to family friends, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, the following year. The British State Visit had the last White Tie State Banquets in Jordon, and thus appearences of the tiara declined.

However, Queen Noor continued to wear the Diamond Sunburst Tiara for official portraits and events through the 1990s, including the Heads of State Banquet at the Guildhall in London in 1995, during the VE Day 50th Anniversary Commemorations and on the Jordanian State Visit to Denmark in 1998, a few months before the death of King Hussein.

After King Hussein’s death, Queen Noor has only been pictured in the Diamond Sunburst Tiara once, for a portrait taken after she founded the King Hussein Foundation in order to serve as an enduring commitment to His late Majesty’s humanitarian vision and legacy. We had hoped to see the Tiara worn by Queen Noor’s younger daughter, Princess Raiyah bint Hussein, for her wedding last year, but she instead wore one of Queen Noor’s brooches and a necklace as a headpiece for her restrained lockdown ceremony.
