A classic design of a six-pronged diamond star with small pearls, the brooch is of unknown provenance but was likely acquired by Princess Margaret, and more notably worn for a Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Lord Charteris of Amisfield, the Former Private Secretary & Lord-in-waiting to the Queen in 2000.

After Princess Margaret’s death in 2002, while many of her jewels were sold by her children at the famous 2006 Christie’s Auction, the Pearl and Diamond Star Brooch was inherited by her only daughter, Lady Sarah Chatto, who first wore it a few months after her mother’s death, at a party to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. The Brooch has been worn quite often by Lady Sarah over the years, for parties, services, and weddings, usually with the Greville Pearl Earrings and Queen Mary’s Diamond and Pearl Riviere.

The most recent appearance of the Pearl and Diamond Star Brooch came earlier this year, when Lady Sarah wore it at the Funeral of her uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. There is no doubt we will continue to see this lovely heirloom for hears to come!

  1. Wow! I didn’t know that Princess Margaret had a brooch so similar to Queen Elizabeth’s Jardine Star diamond brooch! Princess Anne has a very similar brooch as well, if I remember correctly. It’s an antique diamond star brooch and its design is very like this one. This is such a classic and excellent design that I would not be surprised if all royal ladies owned one! I also love Princess Margaret’s pearl earrings, the ones with the little triangle of diamonds? I wish I could find a similar design- in a more modest white topaz iteration, of course!
