President Gerald Ford and First Lady Betty Ford hosted a State Dinner in honour of the Queen (wearing Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara, the Greville Chandelier Earrings, George VI Festoon Necklace, and the Order of the Garter) and Duke of Edinburgh (in the Order of the Garter and Order of Merit) in the Rose Garden of the White House on this day in 1976, followed by dancing in the East Room, during the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s State Visit to celebrate the bicentennial of the United States, which included a lavish Return Banquet at the British Embassy.

The President and First Lady had hosted King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain the previous month, as part of the bicentennial celebrations.
