Featuring an emerald cut aquamarine flanked by small solitaire diamonds set in 24-carat yellow gold, the aquamarine was given to the Princess by her friend, Lucia Flecha de Lima, and created into a ring by Asprey in 1996. While many people claim the aquamarine ring was commissioned as a replacement for Princess Diana’s iconic Sapphire Engagement Ring after their divorce in 1997, it was only worn two times publicly before her tragic death the following year.

The first appearance of the ring came when Diana, Princess of Wales attended the  Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Fund raising Dinner in Sydney, in October 1996, a few months after the finalisation of the couple’s divorce. The ring was paired by a coordinating pearl bracelet with a massive aquamarine clasp.

The following year, Diana, Princess of Wales was photographed wearing her Aquamarine Ring at the Christie’s pre-auction Party in London for the launch of the famous auction of her dresses (which happened on this day in 1997), which came just a few weeks before her tragic death in Paris and raised millions for charity.

After her tragic death in 1997, the Princess’ jewels were inherited by her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, and after giving the Sapphire Engagement Ring to his brother for the Duchess of Cambridge, the Aquamarine Ring was inherited by Prince Harry, and was first worn by the new Duchess of Sussex for their Wedding Reception at Frogmore House.

Later that year, the Duchess of Sussex wore Princess Diana’s Aquamarine Ring again for a Dinner hosted by the King and Queen of Tonga. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex may have left Royal duties, but there is no doubt we will continue to see this beautiful heirloom for years to come!
