Spanish State Visit to Norway, 2006

 Twenty-four years after their first State Visit to Norway in 1982, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia returned to Norway on this day in 2006, at the invitation of their cousins and friends, King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway. The Spanish Royal Family had visited Norway for King Harald and Queen Sonja’s Silver Anniversary in 1993, and the Norwegian Royal Couple had gone on a State Visit to Norway in 1995.

Beginning with an Official Welcome at the Royal Palace of Oslo, other events during King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia’s State Visit included a Visit to the Parliament, a Floral Offering, a Reception for the Spanish Community, Exhibitions, a Tour of an Oil Rig, a Concert of Spanish and Norwegian Music and Reception at the Grand Hotel, and a visit to City of Bergen.

The highlight of the Visit was a State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Oslo hosted by King Harald V (in the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of Charles III) and Queen Sonja (wearing the Norwegian Emerald Parure and the Order of Charles III) for King Juan Carlos (in the Order of St. Olav and the Order of the Golden Fleece) and Queen Sofia (wearing Queen Maria Christina’s Cartier Loop Tiara for the first time as Queen, with Pearl Drop Earrings, the Pearl Necklace and Brooch from the Joyas de Pasar and the Order of St. Olav. Crown Prince Haakon (in the Order of Charles III) and Crown Princess Mette-Marit (wearing her Diamond Daisy Bandeau and Crown Princess Märtha’s Silver Wedding Earrings and the Order of Isabella the Catholic) were also in attendance.
