Princess Anne in Norway, 1971

Following an Official Visit to the United States and a more personal visit to Kenya with the Prince of Wales, Princess Anne embarked on her first solo overseas trip when she began her five-day visit to Norway on this day in 1971.  The British and Norwegian Royal Families are very closely related through the British-born Queen Maud of Norway, a sister of the Queen’s grandfather, King George V. The Queen and Duke’s State Visit to Norway in 1955 was the first outgoing State Visit of her Reign, followed by another in 1981, and one in 2001. They hosted the Norwegian Royal Family in 1951, 1959, 1962, 1988, 1994, and 2005. The Royal Family have also frequently holidayed with the Norwegian Royal Family, most notably in 1969.

Joined by the then heavily pregnant Crown Princess Sonja, Princess Anne visited the Frognerparken, the University of Oslo and went on a cruise with the Royal Family on the Royal Yacht Norge. The highlight of the visit was a Gala Dinner at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Oslo, where Princess Anne (in Queen Alexandra’s Choker) was again joined by the Crown Princess (wearing Queen Alexandra’s Diamond Flowers). The following year, Princess Anne became a godmother to Crown Prince Haakon of Norway and also notably visited for King Harald’s 70th Birthday.
