Queen’s Dubai Sapphire Suite

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – Earl and Countess of Strathearn in Scotland – invited NHS staff to a drive-in cinema to watch a special screening of Disney’s Cruella at the Palace of Holyroodhouse tonight, arriving in one of the Duke of Edinburgh’s special Land Rover, and the Duchess wore a special loan from the Queen, the Earrings from her Dubai Looped Sapphire Demi-Parure!

In 1979, Sheikh Rashid of Dubai gifted the Queen this magnificent suite from Asprey consisting of a necklace of diamond loops with alternating loops surrounding large oval sapphires, plus a pair of earrings and a ring, which was presented ahead of the State Banquet in Dubai, during a landmark Tour of the Gulf States.

The Looped Sapphire Suite was so impressive the Queen apparently “exclaimed in amazement” when she saw it, but she ended up making some slight changes. The necklace was shortened and two spare sapphire loops were made into a new pair of earrings. The original earrings and ring were made into a substantial bracelet.

In 2002, the Queen wore the Dubai Sapphire Suite for the “All The Queen’s Horses” event during at The Royal Windsor Horse Show, which portrayed the historical connections between the Royal Family and horses, to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

In 2005, the Queen wore the entire Dubai Sapphire Suite with Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara for a a Dinner hosted by the Canadian Government in Edmonton to mark the Centennial Year of the Provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. She also wore it for a Canadian Portrait taken around the same time.

Also in 2005, the Queen wore the Dubai Sapphire Suite with the Modern Sapphire Tiara at the annual Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace, and the most recent appearance of the Earrings from the Sapphire Suite was at the annual Garter Day Service in 2009.

Now, the Queen loaned the Earrings from her Dubai Sapphire Suite to the Duchess of Cambridge, as she and the invited NHS staff to a drive-in cinema to watch a special screening of Disney’s Cruella at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, arriving in one of the Duke of Edinburgh’s special Land Rover. The Duke and Duchess – Earl and Countess of Strathearn in Scotland – are in Scotland for Prince William’s role as this year’s Lord High Commissioner at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
