After the success of their visit to the United States the previous year, the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne began an Official Visit to Kenya on this day in 1971, which the Princess also undertook in her role as President of the Save the Children Fund, which included meeting a crowd of orphans during a football match at Starehe Boys’ Centre in Nairobi. Meanwhile, the Prince visited Mombasa and Lake Rdolf and also took part in a Charity Polo Match.

The highlight of the visit was a Safari in the Masai Game Reserve in Nairobi, during which Prince Charles and Princess Anne saw a lion from the back of their jeep. The Prince of Wales also met gamekeepers to learn about animal preservation and the dangers of poaching.

Towards the end of the visit, the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne were formally received by President Jomo Kenyatta and First Lady Ngina Kenyatta in an Official Ceremony in Nairobi. The Prince and Princess (wearing her Grima Pearl Earrings) also attended a Gala Dinner in Nairobi before departing to return to the United Kingdom.
