Princess Margaret’s Emerald Earrings

Today marks the Anniversary of the Death of Princess Margaret, the Queen’s late sister, who died on this day in 2002! As one of the leading members of the Royal Family for her entire life, the late Princess had a magnificent jewelry collection, which included today’s Emerald Earrings!

Featuring a pear shaped emerald/jade/tourmaline suspended from an antique 18th century diamond frame, these earrings were in Princess Margaret’s collection by the mid-1960s, when she began to wear them for many official events.

Of unknown provenance, they were probably gifts from her husband, the Earl of Snowdon. The earrings were also worn in two famous portraits taken by her then husband, Lord Snowdon, and remained in her collection until her death, last being notably worn for a charity concert at St, James’s Palace in 1984 and a State Opening of Parliament in the 1990s.

After Princess Margaret’s death in 2002, while many of her jewels were sold by her children at the famous 2006 Christie’s Auction, the Emerald Earrings were inherited by her only daughter, Lady Sarah Chatto, who wore them for the Queen’s 80th Birthday Dinner at Kew Palace in 2006, the Wedding of her sister Lady Frances, and for the reopening of the Royal Ballet’s Lower School at White Lodge in 2011. Lets hope we continue to see these beautiful royal jewels for years to come!

  1. She was beautiful. That black and white portrait of Margaret by her ex hubby is one of my absolute favs of her, probably 2nd to her in the bathtub wearing the Poltimore. I really like these earrings with the Poltimore, together in the colorized portrait above, it’s such a quintessential fairytale Princess look and such a romantic vibe. These are fabulous pieces. Large and in charge. I have a strange desire to see how these big green beauties would look with the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara. In my mind they would look perfect together if worn with the right outfit with the right hair
