Wedding of Hereditary Grand Duke Georg Donatus of Hesse and Princess Cecilie of Greece, 1931

The Wedding of Hereditary Grand Duke Georg Donatus of Hesse, son of Grand Duke Ernest of Hesse and Princess Eleonore of Solms-Hohensolms-Lich, and Princess Cecilie of Greece and Denmark, daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg, in Lutheran and Orthodox Ceremonies at the Neues Palais in Darmstadt on this day in 1931. The Hereditary Grand Duke and Hereditary Grand Duchess had three children before their tragic death in a plane crash in 1937.

In addition to various members of the German Nobility, Royal Guests and Relatives in attendance included Prince Andrew, Princess MargaritaPrincess TheodoraPrincess Cecilie, Prince Phillip of Greece while Princess Alice (then in an asylum) was not present. Princess Victoria, Marchioness of Milford Haven, Crown Princess Louise of Sweden, Lord Mountbatten, Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna, Princess Nicholas of Greece, Prince George and Princess Marie of Greece, Princess Margaret of Bourbon-Parma were also in attendance at the second of the four weddings of the sisters within a year.

  1. This was such a remarkable time for Prince Philip’s sisters. They all married one after the other, joining German royal families left and right. It was unlucky for them that the Third Reich happened at the heels of their marriages, making them participants in a very dark period in the history of Germany. But Princess Cecilie was the unluckiest one. That plane crash a mere six years after her wedding just about wiped out her entire family. Only one daughter lived because she wasn’t on the plane, but she died a few years later so there was nothing left of them. So very sad.
