Around this time 70 years ago, the then Princess Elisabeth was enjoying a series of Polo Matches, Picnics and Dances on a long 11-week visit to the warm Mediterranean Island of Malta, where the Duke of Edinburgh was stationed as a naval officer. The couple stayed at the Villa Guardamangia, where they were periodically joined by Princess Margaret and Prince Charles during their two-year stay in Malta, which came to an end by the Summer of 1951, due to the King’s ill-health. Both the Princess and the Duke began taking over more Official Duties, starting with a long Tour of Canada in October and setting off on another long Tour of the Commonwealth in February 1952, which was cut short when the King died and the Princess became Queen.
