Queen Margrethe’s Silver Jubilee, 1997

Today marks the 49th Anniversary of the Accession of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who succeeded to the Danish Throne after the Death of her father, King Frederick IX of Denmark in 1972. Since we have already covered her Ruby Jubilee Celebrations in 2012, today is the perfect time to take an in-depth look at Queen Margrethe’s Silver Jubilee Celebrations on this day in 1997, all ahead of her Golden Jubilee Celebrations next year!

The celebrations got off to a rocky start as Queen Margrethe’s uncle, Prince Bertil of Sweden, passed away a few days before, and while the entire Danish Royal Family attended his Funeral in Stockholm on the morning of the 13th, in the evening they attended a Gala Performance at the Royal Danish Theatre, at which Queen Margrethe (wearing the Emerald Parure Tiara) and Prince Henrik were joined by Crown Prince Frederik, Prince Joachim and and Princess Alexandra (wearing the Alexandrine Drop Tiara), King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie (in the Greek Emerald Parure), Princess Benedikte (in Queen Sophia’s Star and Pearl Tiara), Crown Prince Pavlos and Crown Princess Marie Chantal (wearing the Miller Fringe Tiara), and Princess Alexia (in her Diamond Tiara). The Silver Jubilee was especially important to Queen Margrethe as King Frederick IX had died just months before his Silver Jubilee in 1972.

The following morning, the Danish Royal Family waved to crowds from the Balcony of Amalienborg Palace, followed by a Service of Thanksgiving, a Carriage Procession through Copenhagen, and a Reception at the City Hall. In the evening, Queen Margrethe (wearing the Pearl Poiré Tiara, the Order of the Elephant, Order of Dannebrog, and King Frederik IX’s Royal Family Order) hosted a magnificent Banquet at Christiansborg Palace, and the Danish Royal Family was joined only by Royal Guests and Relatives from Greece and Norway, alongside the Finnish and Icelandic Presidents. The Swedish Royal Family was understandably absent. Also in attendance was Queen Ingrid (wearing the Danish Ruby Parure), Crown Prince Frederik, Prince Joachim and Princess Alexandra (wearing the Alexandrine Drop Tiara) King Constantine II and Queen Anne Marie of Greece (in the Ruby Parure Tiara), King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway (wearing Queen Josefina’s Diamond Tiara), Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Princess Bendikte of Denmark (in the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara), Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Crown Prince Pavlos and Crown Princess Marie Chantal (wearing the Miller Fringe Tiara), Prince Nikolaos of Greece, Prince Gustav of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, Princess Nathalie (wearing Princess Benedikte’s Floral Tiara), Princess Alexandra (in Queen Sophia’s Star and Pearl Tiara), Princess Elisabeth of Denmark (wearing Queen Alexandrine’s Fringe Tiara), Count Ingolf of Rosenborg, and Count Christian and Countess Anne Dorte of Rosenborg (in Queen Alexandrine’s Russian Sapphire Tiara),

  1. I do hope that by this time next year we’ll be able to see a great gala again. A Golden Jubilee is a great achievement indeed!
