Today marks the Anniversary of the Birth of Archduchess Regina von Habsburg, who was born on this day in 1925! The youngest child of Prince Georg of Saxe-Meiningen and Countess Klara Marie von Korff genannt Schmising-Kerssenbrock, she grew up at Veste Heldburg. After losing her brother in the Second World War and her father in a Russian prisoner-of-war camp in 1946, Princess Regina studied social work in Bamberg before working at a Caritas home for Hungarian refugees in Munich. In 1951, she married Archduke Otto von Habsburg, the eldest son and exiled Heir of Emperor Charles I and Empress Zita of Austria. The couple had seven children, including Archduke Karl von Habsburg, and resided at the Villa Austria in Pöcking, Germany as they were prohibited from entering Austria until 1966. Archduke Otto had a prominent political career in the European Parliament, the success of which was credited to her support, and as the consort of the Head of the illustrious House of Habsburg, Archduchess Regina was the Grand Mistress of the Order of the Starry Cross and the Order of Saint Elizabeth, and an Honorary Lady Grand Cross of the Sovereign Order of Malta. Archduchess Regina von Habsburg passed away in Germany in 2010, at the age of 85.
