The Prince of Wales and Lavinia Baring, daughter of Sir Mark Baring and later a Lady in Waiting to the Princess of Wales, joined the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh as they viewed annual Royal Charity Performance of the famous Bertram Mills Christmas Circus at Olympia, London on this day in 1960, following which the Queen received bouquet of orchids by Coco the Clown.

The following day, the Royal Family left London to spend Christmas at Sandringham, at the end of a busy year which included the Birth of Prince Andrew, the French State Visit to Britain, the Wedding of Princess Margaret, the Thai State Visit to Britain, 400th Anniversary of the Reformation of Scotland, the State Visit of the King and Queen of Nepal, a Royal Tank Regiment Ball, and the State Opening of Parliament. The following year, the Queen and Duke had an extensive Tour of India and Pakistan and State Visits to Nepal and Iran in the Winter, State Visits to Italy and The Vatican in the Spring, and extensive Tours of Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Gambia in the Autumn.

Five years later, the Queen and Duke were joined by Prince Charles and Princess Anne as they attended the last Charity Performance of the Bertram Mills Christmas Circus, held to benefit the NSPCC, the London Federation of Boys’ Clubs and the Children’s Country Holiday Fund.
