Wedding of Prince Christoph of Hesse and Princess Sophie of Greece, 1930

The Wedding of Prince Christoph of Hesse, son of the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel and Princess Margaret of Prussia, and 16 year-old Princess Sophie of Greece and Denmark (wearing the Hesse Fleur-de-Lys Tiara), daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg, in a Greek Orthodox Ceremony at Schloss Friedrichshof in Kronberg, followed by a Lutheran Service at the Schloss Chapel on this day in 1930. In addition to various members of the German Nobility, Royal Guests and Relatives in attendance included Prince Andrew, Princess Margarita, Princess Theodora, Princess Cecilie and Prince George of Greece, while Princess Alice (then in an asylum) and Prince Phillip were not present. Prince Christoph and Princess Sophie had five children, including Princess Dorothea of Hesse, and remained happily married until his death in a plane crash in 1943, while serving the Nazis in WWII.

Prince Phillip (soon to be the Duke of Edinburgh) was present, alongside Princess Margarita and Princess Theodora, when Princess Sophie remarried to Prince George William of Hanover in 1946. The couple had three more children and were happily married until her death in 2001.

  1. I think Princess Sophie had a remarkable life. Married practically still a child, widowed with three very young children, and then remarried, quite happily each time. She was the closest in age to Prince Philip, 7 years his senior, which could be why she was also the one who had the most contact with him. TBH, I think her entire family’s story is worthy of a miniseries beginning with her remarkable mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg!

  2. Her brother was there, you can see him sitting right in front of the groom.

I see Princess Anne in Princess Theodora’s face.
