The Engagement of Prince William of Wales and Catherine Middleton was announced on this day in 2010, following almost an decade-long relationship since meeting while studying at the University of St Andrews. Clarence House announced:

The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.

Prince William and Miss Middleton became engaged in October during a private holiday in Kenya. Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton’s father.”

Following the announcement, the couple appeared in front of the press in a photocall at St James’s Palace, when it was revealed that Catherine had received Princess Diana’s Sapphire Engagement Ring.

That evening, Prince William and Catherine Middleton gave an exclusive interview to ITV News political editor, and family friend, Tom Bradby. The couple became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after their Wedding at Westminster Abbey in 2011 and have three children; Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
