King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit of Thailand completed their monumental series of State Visits around Europe on this day in 1960. The 6-month period was one of the most defining of the King’s 70-year reign, instrumental in creating a wonderful image of the glamorous King and Queen and their Kingdom.

The couple began in the United States in June and, using Switzerland as a base, went on no less than fourteen State Visits until November. After a period of rest in Switzerland, the Thai Royal Family finally returned to Thailand in January 1961. This Tour has been one that I have been wanting to cover for years, especially after narrowly missing the exhibition of Queen Sirikit’s wardrobe on my visit to Thailand last year, and I was so excited to share the visits on their 60th Anniversary.
