The Coronation of the Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, the 225th descendant of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, as “Haile Selassie, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the tribe of Judah, Elect of God’” at Saint George’s Cathedral in Addis Ababa on this day in 1930, alongside Empress Menen Asfaw. Dignitaries from around the world in attendance included the Duke of Gloucester representing Britain and the Prince of Udine from Italy. The Emperor had to flee Ethiopia in exile after the Italian Invasion in 1936, remaining in exile in the United Kingdom until his restoration in 1941, ruling until he was deposed following a Soviet-backed military coup d’etat in 1974. The monarchy was abolished in 1975, and later that year, Emperor Haile Selassie was strangled to death under the orders of the military socialist Derg regime. More HERE.
