Saltoun Tiara

Happy Birthday to Flora Fraser, 21st Lady Saltoun, who turns 90 today! The Chief of Clan Fraser who was the only holder of a Lordship in the House of Lords, Lady Saltoun is a fascinating figure who was married to Queen Victoria’s great-grandson, a member of the extended British Royal Family, and also much closely related to the Swedish, Danish and Greek Royal Families. To mark the day, not only are we we learning about Lady Saltoun, but also featuring her Tiara (which has been in the pipeline for almost five years).

Featuring a ornate diamond design set with a large blue topaz or aquamarine, the Tiara is quite definitely a Fraser Heirloom, and possibly dates from the Edwardian era,  making an early notable appearence when the couple attended the St Andrew’s Ball in Montreal in 1961, which Lady Saltoun presided over as the Chief of Clan Fraser.

Lady Saltoun most notably wore the Tiara at the Wedding of Queen Margrethe of Denmark in 1967 and the following year at the Wedding of Princess Benedikte of Denmark and Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg in 1968, who are both daughters of her husband’s first cousin, Queen Ingrid of Denmark.

In 2013, the Tiara was worn by Lady Saltoun’s granddaughter, Louise Nicolson, for her wedding to Charles Morshead. Lady Saltoun should also own some jewels of her mother-in-law, Princess Patricia of Connaught, like her Diamond Tiara, which means this is not the only Tiara in the family, but lets hope we get more occasions to see these family heirlooms again soon.

The design of the Tiara seems to be quite popular, as I was told by the Queen of Malaysia that she also owns an identical Aquamarine and Diamond Tiara, which comes from Carrington & Co.
