The Queen (wearing the Vladimir Tiara and the Order of the Garter) and Duke of Edinburgh (wearing the Order of the Garter) have an Audience with Pope John Paul II at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City during their State Visit to the Vatican on this day in 1980, during a series of State Visits to Italy, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. The Duchess of Grafton (wearing the Grafton Tiara) was also present. The Queen made an earlier State Visit to the Vatican in 1961 and exactly twenty years later in 2000.

  1. I know the Queen hardly ever uses it, but she looks fabulous in black! Her super formal attire is quite different to what they wear today. Back then, it’s the long, black gown, it’s the veil, it’s the gorgeous Vladimir Tiara with Pearls, it’s the Order of the Garter, it’s everything! She certainly looked every inch a Queen, didn’t she? Absolutely magnificent!
