The Norwegian Royal Family celebrated Constitution Day, the National Day of Norway, on May 17th, in a very different manner than their usual celebrations due to the ongoing pandemic.

In the morning, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit were joined by Princess Ingrid Alexandra, and Prince Sverre Magnus, with their dogs, walked down to Asker, outside their residence at Skaugum, where they met representatives of students, choirs and corps instead of the usual Children’s Parade, and also thanked Russian representatives from Asker, Bleiker, Nesbru and Røyken high schools, to thank them for their advice during the Pandemic. Afterwards, the Crown Princely Family rode around Asker in the iconic A1 and A5 royal cars, to the Solgården housing and care center, Borgenbråten community and activity center and a housing cooperative on Borgen.

Later, the Crown Princely Family joined King Harald and Queen Sonja on the Balcony of the Royal Palace of Oslo, where they greeted representatives of Oslo’s 74 schools, rather than the annual Children’s Parade in Oslo, a custom which dates back to 1906. Afterwards, King Harald and Queen Sonja were joined by Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit were as they rode around Oslo in the A1 and A5 royal cars, passing through the Kampen care center, Sofienberghjemmet at Grünerløkka and Ullevål hospital.

  1. Great blog! Just a minor but important “lost in transaltion” memo to this post. The Crown Prince family did not thank any Russian representatives from Asker yesterday. The term “russ” refers to students celebrating they have completed the upper secondary school. This has been a (strange) norwegian tradition during spring since the 20th century.
