Sad news out of Spain today! Infanta Pilar of Spain, Duchess of Badajoz, Dowager Viscountess of la Torre has passed away at the age of 83, while being treated for colon cancer! The eldest child of the Count of Barcelona and Princess María de las Mercedes of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, and the elder sister of King Juan Carlos and Infanta Margarita, she was born in Cannes, grew up in Portugal, where the Spanish Royal Family resided in exile until the 1970s. In 1967, Infanta Pilar married Luis Gómez-Acebo y Duque de Estrada, Viscount de la Torre, renouncing her succession rights to the Spanish Throne before her marriage, and being made the Duchess of Badajoz. The couple had five children and remained happily married until his death in 1991. Infanta Pilar was the President of the International Equestrian Federation from 1994 to 2006, and from 1996 to 2006, she was a member of the International Olympic Committee for Spain and a Member of the Executive Board of the Spanish Olympic Committee. While she did not undertake many official engagements, the Infanta was frequently seen at royal and society events. We offer our condolences to her family at this difficult time!
