The Queen (wearing the George IV State Diadem, Queen Victoria’s Pearl EarringsQueen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee Necklace, and Order of the Garter) and the Duke of Edinburgh (in the Order of the Garter) ride in the Irish State coach to the Palace of Westminster for the State Opening of Parliament on this day in 1952. This was the first State Opening in the Queen’s reign, and she was followed by Princess Margaret (wearing the Halo Scroll Tiara) and her Mistress of the Robes, Mary, Duchess of Devonshire (in the Devonshire Palmette Tiara). After returning, the Queen, Duke, Prince Charles, and Princess Anne waved to assembled crowds from the Balcony of Buckingham Palace.
